Asaala Inchokosakbo (Elbow Basket)

A river cane elbow basket with a red and green design throughout the two sides.
Description: 

This is a river cane basket with two long, thin arms with openings that are on either side of the V, or elbow, shape of this basket. Across the two arms of this basket, there are red and green dyed cane woven in a staggered pattern until the middle joint. Each opening of the basket have the double woven rim and the handle is thin, with green cane twisted in with the regular cane that makes up the handle.

Cultural Narrative: 

This basket was purchased from Susie Williams by M.R. Harrington when he visited the Coushatta community while he was traveling through the Southeastern region of the United States. In Harrington's original notes he states that he purchased the basket for $.25 and wrote the phonetic spelling as "at suka ba" the abbrevieated Koasati word for elbow, which is "inchoksakbo."
